1950’s bungalow transformed into beautiful family home


Project Background

The new owners of this wonderful plot on the Thames Path are cast iron proof that great building plots are still out there to be found! Despite the enormous obstacles against them in the early part of 2020, our clients were able to jump on this amazing opportunity and secure the plot for the future family home. The plot is located on the Thames Path, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A 1950’s bungalow is currently nestled into a mature garden with highly attractive specimen trees and views out onto the Thames River.

The bungalow is rather the odd man out in the current street scene and initial discussions with the planners were positive for a replacement dwelling. Due to the small-scale nature of the existing building and the local authority’s replacement dwelling policy, we advised our clients that a substantial renovation and extension scheme would be more successful through planning to achieve their aspirations for the plot and their future home.

The House

Our clients were looking to create their long-term home for their family of five (including Bertie the dog!) and all the gear that comes with an active family life.

We set about creating a scheme that would not only increase the size of the living accommodation but also improve the layout and flow of the house. Our clients wanted to improve the aesthetic appearance of the existing building and for us to seamlessly integrate the new elements.

The current house lacked a defined entrance and the parking and turning needed to be improved. We also wanted the scheme to improve the views from inside the house out towards the river whilst also providing a greater connection between the living accommodation and the more private garden area.


Following an initial Covid-secure site meeting and through the power of Zoom, we have created a scheme with our clients that will not only enhance their property but that will comply with local planning policy requirements in this highly sensitive area. We are hoping for a successful planning decision before the end of September.
